Excellent book but is missing important areas in golf

 on January 24, 2018
By Shaun
Of course this book is a classic for golfers. My main gripe is Hogan seems to minimize the challenge many golfers have with their short game; pitching, chipping, and putting are basically ignored in the book. I can’t understand why Hogan would not spend more time talking about the fundamentals around all facets of the game. Clearly Hogan had a beautiful swing, one he worked on for years and basically perfected. My swing will never look so beautiful. The problem is that many of us 15+ handicappers really struggle with consistency in the short game and putting. I estimate I would regularly shoot in the high 70s and low 80s if I’d eliminate poor chips and 3 putts. Getting more guidance in these areas is integral to playing good, consistent golf. No doubt hitting the ball solidly is important as well, but if you can’t putt, a golfer will never shoot good scores. He should have devoted at least a chapter to putting, where a golfer could better understand nuances like reading greens and putting consistently. I, for instance, can practice putting for an hour and do pretty well, but when I get on a green on the course I hit the ball all over the place. Hogan presumably was an excellent putter and chipper, as all greats are, but he says virtually nothing in the book about these skills. I don’t get that.

I’m sure glad he isn’t still alive or Mr Steal Yo Girl …

Get lost in the intrinsic mind of a straight player and genius. Yes I’m talking about the course but I’m also talking about the whorses. Ben Hogan cleans up EVERY night after slaying it on the turf. This guy can sink his 3 wood into any hole and always puts from the rough. Each lesson of golf is quickly followed by a major pimp point that’ll put your pompous playa partying primed for the prize. I’m sure glad he isn’t still alive or Mr Steal Yo Girl would be snatching my main piece, my side piece, and my other side piece up every night. Also teaches you how to make a mean Manhattan.

Wish I read this 20 years ago……..

Wish I read this 20 years ago when I first started playing the game. Over the years I learned things that made my game decently work. After reading this, it became apparent that my fundamentals were wayyyyyy off. This brought new perspective to my game. my arms would tire out by the end of a round due to over utilization of my arm muscles. Now, My swing is more efficient, repeatable and effective. Thanks to all the reviewers who highly recommended this!

My father had me get him this book from the library approximately 3 months ago. Since that time he has shaved several points of of his game and he says his swing has improved a good deal. I ordered a new copy from Amazon for his birthday. There were notes in the margins of the library copy (an ignorant thing to do to a book not belonging to you) so I got him a brand new edition so that he may make his own notes. He loves it.

A classic

Hogan is the best. He has such a scientific approach. He has tuned every aspect of the golf swing and has shared his learning with the reader. This is my first year playing golf. I have found this book to be the best resource in terms of learning the game. You want to read this book before, during, and after taking golf lessons. I review chapters before rounds and before heading to the driving range. Highly recommended.

Anyone dedicated to becoming a better golfer should read this book and review it often. Mr. Hogan outlines the fundamentals of the swing clearly and strips away all unnecessary components.

Not only the best golf book I have read

Not only the best golf book I have read, but by far the best instructional tool I’ve used all together. It is simple and effective. I read it about a month ago and have been practicing Ben’s lessons/fundamentals; going back to the book and re-reading constantly. I have never swung the club so confidently and correctly. I have always enjoyed golf, but since I acquired this book I have had more fun than ever.

The Grays Anatomy of Golf

Its hard to review this masterpiece. I’ve owned at least 5 copies of it over my lifetime, and probably given away at least that many and recently added one for my Kindle. All I can say is if you asked any reputable teacher as to his/her opinion as to the greatest instruction book ever written 75% would point to this without hesitation. Excerpts from the book along with the accompanying famous drawings by Anthony Ravelli are considered a classic baseline and turn up several times a year in golf periodicals. The Fundamentals are still the fundamentals of most teaching platforms despite the fact that the book was first published over 50 years ago. Its the Gray’s Anatomy of Golf

Magnificent Book!

Extremely helped my golf game! I shot a 49 and 51 last week, after reading this book, ESPECIALLY the section about the swing plane, i shot a 38 and 42 this week! An incredible increase, purely by going off of what this book speaks of.

Kendra also demonstates her swing technique with the 9 Iron, 5 Iron and the Driver.

To the Golf Trolls: Remember, this is Kendra's application of Ben Hogan's principals. Just to clarify, Kendra IS NOT Ben Hogan, so obviously things will look a little different.

Otherwise, ENJOY!
