Get Some Winter Sun in Your Gold Holiday | Golf Club Sz

If last winter is anything to go by; the impassable roads, schools that were closed and that general air of resignation, then what better way this time round than combine winter sun with a golfing holiday? For those of your friends that might not be able to go, there’s always a great selection of golf gifts to bring back. Now you wouldn’t want to make them jealous would you?

Let’s firstly have a look at Bermuda. It was discovered in 1505 by the grandly named Spanish Navigator Juan de Bermudez, who found the island totally inhabited by pigs. These days it’s a British overseas territory and has more courses than fast food joints; that in itself is good enough reason to go. It’s beautifully situated in the North Atlantic and in a nutshell offers great .

They play by the rules though. Whilst golf in Scotland may feel light years away, the attitude that is St Andrews golf still prevails. Strict dress codes are in force at all the clubs, right down to collars on your shirts. You’d get away with a snazzy pair of Bermudas providing they reach the knee and again something to bear in mind when considering golf gifts.

Golf is a very serious business here. There are several ways to book a round of golf. You can contact some of the courses direct; some private clubs offer corporate memberships to hotel guests or for a government course, you ring a central reservation number and they’ll sort it out. They want you here and they want you to play golf.

Obviously it’s not golf in Scotland, but when the wind comes in off the Atlantic, St Andrews golf doesn’t seem that far away! The greens in particular play slower and firmer than say in the United States. There’s less irrigation here, although you may not think that with the number of water hazards out there waiting for you.

If you want to consider somewhere nearer home, Madeira wouldn’t be a bad bet. For most it brings to the mind ideas of Madeira cake or fine wine but these days it really is a growing golfing destination and for good reason. It caters for all abilities from a 9 hole pitch and putt through to a 27 hole supercourse and all points in between.

It’s a great spot. It’s much nearer Africa than mainland Europe, over a million tourists visit the island every year and in the winter you’ll have a steady 20 degree climate in which to operate. It’s not by accident that Madeira bears the label of ‘The Island of Eternal Spring’. Much of the interior of the island features a rugged mountainous landscape, peppered with lush green valleys and deep forests.

Along the coastline proud cliffs stand like beacons and sandy beaches hug gentle bays. Roads to the coast are pretty good and every golf course will bless you with stunning views; one day the backdrop will be the beautiful Atlantic shore, the next the edge of a sub-tropical forest. For a reminder of the experience, don’t ever forget those golf gifts either.
